Despacito is a hit song from Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi together with Daddy Yankee was released in the year. It was the top streamed song at that moment within a period of six months. The track is a mixture of pop music and reggaeton did not only bring attention to reggaeton, but also brought attention to Latin music in general. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs that were Spanish mainly, and four more in 2016. During the height of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 predominantly Spanish tracks made the Top 100 as well, and by 2020 there were 41 of them. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in the year 2017, a number of popular artists began to collaborate with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny collaborated on MIA (2018) as did Madonna and Maluma on Medellin, Madonna and Maluma worked together on Medellin and Medellin in 2019 By 2020 a few reggaeton stars were complaining about its inclination towards mainstream. However, a younger generation specifically Rauw Alejandro, sought to keep reggaeton evolving. The genre often included elements of electronic dance music, as well as different styles.
